A Warning from History: When Hunger Feeds the Wolf

Earle George Williams | Senior Correspondent

Why look back at Germany in the 1920s and 30s? What does the rise of the Nazis have to do with us in the Caribbean today?

Everything.

History is not just a dusty book; it’s a mirror. The story of how a civilized nation like Germany fell into the grip of a monster like Hitler is a warning about what happens when a society breaks.

Germany after World War I was a broken place. They were humiliated by a peace treaty that stripped them of their pride and their money. Then came the economic collapse. Imagine buying a loaf of bread with a wheelbarrow full of cash because the money was worthless. Imagine 40% of the country out of work. People were hungry, desperate, and ashamed.

When people are in that kind of pain, they don’t want complex explanations. They want a savior. They want someone to say, “I can fix it,” and “It’s not your fault; it’s their fault.”

Hitler didn’t seize power by force initially; he used the democracy he hated to destroy it. He offered simple slogans: “Bread and Work.” He gave the people a scapegoat—the Jews, the communists, the “others.” He tapped into a deep vein of resentment and fear. The conservative politicians thought they could control him; they thought he was a useful idiot. They were wrong.

We look at our own region, at the world today. We see rising inequality. We see young people with degrees but no jobs. We see anger at the “system.” This is the soil where extremism grows. It doesn’t always look like swastikas and goose-stepping soldiers. Sometimes it looks like populists who promise to burn it all down. Sometimes it looks like turning on our neighbors, our immigrants, or the most vulnerable among us.

The lesson from 1933 is that democracy is fragile. It dies when good people get too tired to fight for it. It dies when we trade our values for the promise of a full belly. We must ensure that in our quest for a better life, we don’t open the door to the wolves.
